Programs for art educators and teacher training

San Francisco State University, Department of Art Education

SFSU's Art Education Department and the College of Extended Learning offer an accredited course for students wanting to participate in CAP as an artist educator while earning credits toward graduation. This class is a service-learning course designed for students planning to go into the fields of art education, general education or community cultural development.

Class Description

This course offers students a unique opportunity to travel and live in Costa Rica while teaching and learning through the arts. Throughout the class students learn basic principles that inform community art and cultural development practice and study, design, and later implement a series of interconnected art projects. By taking art education beyond the classroom, museum or studio and into everyday life, participants will collaborate with communities to create art that addresses environmental and social issues relevant to the working context. This year, the class will focus on three main areas that relate to living and teaching in Punta Banco, Costa Rica: 1) theories and techniques that inform community art; 2) environmental challenges faced by Costa Rica and how art might redress these issues; and 3) artists as activists and cultural workers. Each student is expected to participate in a group project upon returning to the US, which will be described in further detail.

John F. Kennedy, Department of Arts & Consciousness

In partnership with CAP, JFK University is offering a new course through their Department of Arts & Consciousness. The program provides multi-cultural learning exchanges between artists, students, teachers and locals to creatively and holistically address environmental issues. Through course work at the JFK University Berkeley Campus, and during the three-week summer residency in Costa Rica, up to 14 participants will integrate research in eco-psychology, consciousness and community art into a co-created art project with the residents of Punta Banco.  Upon returning to the United States, students will then modify or further develop these projects and implement them in their own communities.  Students will also summarize their research and experiential learning in a final presentation, their own personal artwork and an 8 page academic paper for a total of 6 quarter units of course credit through JFK University.  There are also limited spaces for non-students to audit the course for no credit.
